Manual

I. Compatible operating systems, browsers, internetconnection and media players

Since most of this website's content is multimedia, it is advisable to view this page using a computer with adequate video performance. The minimum required setup would be a Pentium III class system or a Macintosh G3 with at least 256 MB of RAM. More recent computer systems will give better results.

It is advisable to use a broadband connection.

It is highly recommended not to have other multimedia applications running whilst visiting the Webcast Portal website. This could lead to undesired side-effects (multiple audio, interruption of audio, no smooth image play, etc.).

It is advisable to use an up-to-date system to view the video streams.

Software environment: browser and player supported combinations

Below is a list of operating system, browser and player combinations the portal works with. Software releases are indicated as minimum requirement. When using other combinations or platforms some features might not be working correctly (e.g. the video fullscreen mode or the automatic update of slides that are presented next to the video).

II. Problems playing streaming video

Having either no visual or audio playback while watching the video stream might be a result of a technical failure. Please follow these steps to find the source of the problem, and a possible solution to resolve the issue.

Step 1 - Playback software

The first thing to know is whether or not you are using the recommended software. Using an old version of software may lead to compatibility problems. In section I you can find a list of the recommended software and versions for viewing the Webcast Portal website.

The next check is to verify if all the devices are connected properly and are fully installed in your operating system environment. For example: if you try to listen to an audio stream, and the speakers that are attached to your soundcard are turned off or you do not have speakers at all, then no sound will be audible.

If you are not sure that you have the correct and most up to date media player applications perform an automated checkup of your computer configuration.

If you need a player update, please select it from the list below and you will be directed towards a page where you can download the updated version.

Step 2 - firewall

If the correct software to play the video and or audio streams are installed on your computer, everything is connected properly and you are connected to the Internet, but still have no sound or video, your computer might be behind a firewall that does not allow you to watch a streaming video broadcast.

You can check if this is the case.

If the firewall is blocking the streaming, you will have to adjust some settings in your firewall or have your local network administrator do it for you.

The port used by the streaming application is 554, the protocol RTP. If this port is closed, you may view the images because getting them via port 80 and http, but the quality will not be optimal.

If you're not sure whether these ports are open on your system check it with this tool .

Step 3 - update your software

Please make sure that you have the latest updates for your software configuration. For MS Windows users it is also recommended to update the DirectX Drivers. If you are still experiencing problems, try installing your media player again.

III. Bad video quality, bad sound

Assuming your computer is working properly and that quality of the streams and your Internet connections is good, you might have configured your player incorrectly (e.g. proxy address and port, if you are behind a firewall).

IV. Synchronization and lipsync problems

The video can desync due to a number of issues. Either your internet connection is not fast enough to download all the information simultaneously or your computer's processor is not fast enough. To ensure that your system is adequate for viewing online video streams, please consult the minimum requirements stated in section I .

V. Language

This portal is translated into all official languages of the European Union. However, if when you select a specific language some items still appear in another one, this is probably because of the settings in your browser (Preferences, Options or the-like).

VI. Help with the chat application

Watch the Chat
You can see the chatroom on the bottom right of the screen. Without logging in you can see the nicknames and messages of the people participating in the chat.

Join the Chat
To join the chat, type a nickname into the box and click on "enter" at the bottom right of the chatroom window. You now can chat with the other users. The nickname must only contain alphabetic characters, and be 2 to 20 characters in length.

Full-screen Chat
After logging into the chatroom you are also able to enlarge the chatroom window. The enlarged chatroom window is divided into two parts. You can type your message on the bottom of the full-screen chat. Although this box isn't very big you can type a message up to 500 characters long. Typing "Enter" on your computer or clicking on the "send" button submits your message into the chat. If you want to minimise the large chatroom window, either close the window or click on "Minimise". The small chatroom window will be updated with the new chat content.

Send Private Messages
The nicknames of the people that are participating in the chat appear on the right side of the dialogue. You can send a private message to one of these names and only this person will get your message.
